Section VIII — The Twins
The twins arrived as a “surprise”. Later, I often said it was heaven giving me another chance to make up for the “time together” I had missed.
My wife sent me a prenatal examination report. The first thing I saw was the word “twins”. It did not feel quite real.
I replied, “Even if we have to sell everything, we are having them.”
The joy in my heart quickly outweighed the pressure of becoming a father of five.
In 2018, Cindy and Candy were born. I also became the father with the most children among my friends.
“Sanxiong, aren’t you holding a one-month celebration for the twins?” a friend asked.
“I am. I just don’t know whom to invite.”
In the end, we booked the celebration at Hai Shang Tian restaurant.
It was a lively evening, with many friends there. We had planned for eight tables and ended up filling nine. I drank quite a lot that night. At one point, I sat alone by the Tagus, smoking, and suddenly remembered the night of my wedding.
I married in October 2007. The bride was Huang Xiaowei, from Qingtian. We had also booked nine tables for our wedding banquet, but only eight were filled.
I smiled. “Honey, Dabao and Xiaobao have brought back the table we lost.”
There was a park near our old office. I often took Kimi and the twins there to play. Beside the park was a little café kiosk, and the waiter was always warm. Whenever he saw me coming, he would already have poured me a beer and left it waiting for me.
“Dad, let’s go home,” Kimi said.
On the way back, he made a suggestion: “Dad, can we not come to the park next time?”
“Why?”
“Because we’re grown up now. The park isn’t fun anymore.” His twin sister voted in favour as well.
The twins are eight already; children grow up in the end!

Contemplation
Contemplating my own life: advance or retreat. — Zhou Yi · Guan, line 3
Guan finds a new object when the children lose interest in the park. The way of accompanying them remains familiar to their father, but needs change; even a good practice may need revision.
Making amends belongs to the father’s account of his life. The children have their own path; attending to today’s interests gives the opportunity to accompany them concrete presence.
Reading in briefCompanionship grows with the children’s present needs. What stays with you here?
